Utilising just 250kgs of dry ice per container (and placed within a conventional freezer), the KTMD42 (with two full product loaded pallets) maintains a consistent internal temperature of <–60°C for 227 hours (over nine days). This means that any warehouse-sized freezer or truck-sized reefer can be turned into <-60°C deep-freeze units without the huge amount of energy, cost, health and safety issues typically associated with such devices
Transporting at <–60°C for over 94 hours
Using just the airline limit of 250kg of dry ice the KTM42D can transport a massive two Euro pallets of product at <–60°C and will maintain this temperature for more than 94 hours. This offers the sector the largest single-shipment capacity currently available whilst maintaining an airline compliant dry-ice-to-container ratio.
Giving remote and mobile freezers deep-frozen capabilities

Under five minutes refill load time
To extend compliance time the operative does NOT need to enter the KTM42D. With its unique two-door load system dry-ice can be replenished from outside the unit in under five minutes
Simply open both doors and slide new dry-ice trays into place pushing the redundant trays out the other side. This process ensures that even when re-loading multiple containers at a time the exposure to dry-ice and the <-60°C temperature is minimal. The speed of dry-ice replenishment is further protection for the product
Data logger and management software
Each KTM42D comes with its own datalogger and can be monitored remotely 24/7. If the KTM42D is being used in transport the logger will prove compliance during complex transit protocols. If used for extended storage of deep-frozen pharmaceutical products the logger can be set to alert when more dry-ice is required. This allows for a very small workforce via text alerts or email to monitor and maintain multiple KTM42Ds at <-60°C whilst working in a -20°C environment with minimal dry-ice contact

How this enables logistics across the deep-frozen supply chain
With its five-minute replenishment system, a single KTM42D could be used to store and transport pharmaceutical product at <-60°C globally, allowing for unlimited storage and complex transportation protocols. How TOWER innovated
TOWER was challenged by several leading Pharmaceutical companies, 3PLs and NGOs to address the impending supply-chain issue of transporting deep-frozen COVID-19 vaccines and APIs at <–60°C
Our partners had identified particular issues in the global logistics supply chain and wanted our R&D team to focus on these key conditions:
- Currently there is nowhere near the amount of <–60°C storage required to store the estimated 10 billion vaccinations required globally. So, with the intention of using passive containers to supplement and support that situation, our clients asked for a storage time of five days to be the target
- The cost – to say nothing of health and safety issues – of running <–60°C deep-frozen warehouses makes this solution globally cost prohibitive
- Airline limitations only allow up to 250kg of dry ice per container and current container specifications would be cost prohibitive
- Developing nations (perhaps the most vulnerable) haven’t the financial or energy infrastructure required to build or maintain <–60°C warehousing.
TOWER’s R&D team set to work modifying the existing and globally-accepted double Euro pallet KTM42 container to see if it could be adapted to become a dry-ice <–60°C storage device. Working on the basis that -20°C warehousing is more readily available than anything colder, they saw the opportunity to extend compliance times by modifying the KTM42D to be used as a double-pallet small freezer unit by utilising a small amount of dry ice
By adding dry-ice shelves above and below the pallet storage area, and putting additional thermal insulation into the sides (neither reducing internal capacity), the KTM42D was created
Through this process and innovation TOWER’s R&D team has developed a deep understanding and appreciation of dry-ice sublimation rate (the rate that dry ice dissipates). This allows us to work with clients directly to help with pinch points such as customs or longer and more arduous journeys, in order to develop a bespoke and compliant solution.
