Moving away from single use in pharmaceutical packaging

Stay up to date

Sustainability remains a key focus for the pharmaceutical industry, with temperature-controlled solutions playing a pivotal role in advancing overall sustainability in the manufacturing and delivery of pharmaceutical products. Niall Balfour, Chief Executive Officer at Tower Cold Chain, explores the sustainability implications associated with both single-use, semi-reusable and fully reusable temperature-controlled shippers.

A growing number of pharmaceutical companies and their third-party logistics partners are now prioritising sustainability not only in their manufacturing processes but also in the transportation of their products. Major players in the pharmaceutical sector are taking significant steps to bolster their sustainability credentials, with Pfizer, AstraZeneca, GSK and others all pledging to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030.

As more organisations follow suit, opting to transition from non-sustainable and often wasteful transit solutions to reusable alternatives, the popularity of single-use packaging is on the decline within the industry. In contrast, there is a rising preference for long-term solutions, particularly in the context of creating a more sustainable cold chain that incorporates reusable pharmaceutical containers.
